Shostakovich Quintet

SHOSTAKOVICH PIANO QUINTET

May 25, 2024, 7:00 AM

The Cube, Wodonga

Composer and pianist Shostakovich lived under the constant threat and reality of authoritarian regimes - keeping a packed suitcase under the stairs in case he got a knock on the door in the middle of the night.

His music was subversive, characterised by sharp contrasts, elements of the grotesque and ambivalent tonality. On the other side was his quirky humour, making him a man of great contrasts.

Experience both sides of his genius in this brilliant program performed by Orpheus Trio, with special guest artists Merlyn Quaife (soprano), Markiyan Melnychenko (violin) and Simon Oswell (viola).

Program:

Piano Trio No. 1 in C minor, Op.8
Seven Romances on Poems of Alexander Blok Op. 127
Piano Quintet in G minor, Op.57

SIBELIUS VIOLIN CONCERTO WITH CSO

November 24, 2022

Llewellyn Hall, ANU School of Music, Acton, Canberra

Jessica Cottis Conductor

Markiyan Melnychenko Violin

Canberra Symphony Orchestra

This program opens with a new CSO commission by Leah Curtis, a Los Angeles-based composer with Canberra roots. Curtis is best known for her original film scores and soundtracks, collaborations she describes as ‘work of the head, the heart and the gut; work of instinct, of intellect and of curiosity…to create a memorable emotional journey.’

Then, we return to the seemingly infinite imagination of Igor Stravinsky. Following hot on the heels of the Firebird Suite, Petrushka narrates the escapades of three puppets (Petrushka the rascally ringleader), set in a traditional Shrovetide fairground. This is one of the composer’s most colourful, inventive and wide-ranging scores, steeped in the Russian folk tradition and yet suggestive of the emerging film medium in its musical ‘jump cuts’ and scene changes.

Like Stravinsky, Jean Sibelius draws extensively on folk traditions, his Violin Concerto described by the American critic Olin Downes as ‘bardic songs heard against a background of torches…in some wild Northern night.’ It’s a work of striking contrasts: hypnotic, darkened hues electrified by blinding lights.

The opening stillness reflects the calm of a Finnish lake; time stands still in the ambiguous harmony, both major and minor. There’s something inherently organic in Sibelius: he responds with an exceptional intensity to the natural world, even by Nordic standards, as though its changing moods and seasons inspire not only the content of his music but also its form.

Don Immel presents the third concert in his Trombone Hero series.

This concert features Australian premieres of several rediscovered works for trombone solo and string orchestra. In the mid 19th century, Belgian conservatories engaged prominent, local composers to write music for their artist staff and students. In 2018, Don visited the conservatoire libraries of Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Liége hoping to rediscover a few pieces for trombone. Returning with over 4000 pictures of manuscript and out-of-print music that had been buried in conservatoire libraries for over a century, Don spent much of the next few years typesetting scores, generating sheet music, and recording the best of this largely forgotten literature.

Contextualising the music of yesterday is the world premiere of Melbourne composer Kate Neal's beautifully creative new work for trombone and strings commissioned through the 2020 ABC Fresh Start Music Fund. Finally, Don is joined by Melbourne Conservatorium brass colleague Joel Brennan to give a rare performance of French composer Jean-Michel Defaye's Concerto for Trombone, Trumpet and String Orchestra.

This concert is part of Don Immel's ongoing research agenda to rediscover, commission, compose, perform and record music that showcases the trombone, with the goal of expanding quality repertoire that engages modern day audiences.

CANCELLED - SOLOIST IN VIVALDI'S FOUR SEASONS

August 1, 2021

Melbourne Recital Centre

Vivaldi would be totally astonished by the fame of his Four Seasons today.

As a priest working in an orphanage, most of his music was only heard by a small circle of people in Venice, and almost all of it was forgotten, lost or disregarded for nearly two centuries after his death.

The Four Seasons is not just well-known: it’s one of the most exciting, colourful and innovative works from the Baroque era. Each concerto is accompanied by a sonnet, and the hallmarks of each Italian season, from birdsong in Spring to pesky flies in Summer, are imagined in amazingly vivid musical form.

CANCELLED - SOLOIST IN VIVALDI'S FOUR SEASONS

July 28, 2021

Bunjil Place, Narre Warren

Brahms

SOLOIST IN BRAHMS' DOUBLE CONCERTO

July 4, 2021

Daylesford Town Hall

Markiyan Melnychenko and Noella Yan will thrill you with the exciting Brahms Double Concerto. This was the composer's last work for orchestra and it was written for cellist Robert Hausmann, a frequent chamber music collaborator, and Brahms' estranged friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim. Joachim was one of the greatest violinists of all time and the piece was a gesture of reconciliation by Brahms towards his friend.

When planning our 2020 season, we intended to pay homage to the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven. We could not do that last year but Beethoven was born in December 1770 so this is still the 250th year since his birth. What better way of celebrating Beethoven than playing one of his famous symphonies. For this concert it is the 8th. The concert will start with Beethoven’s wonderful Egmont Overture.

Brahms – Double Concerto in A minor Op. 102

Beethoven – Symphony No. 8 in F Op. 93

Corpus Medicorum returns to Elisabeth Murdoch Hall in 2021.

Corpus Medicorum is busting to get back onto the stage to play its favourite music for its favourite Corpus friends.

Mindful of the current health situation, Corpus Medicorum presents works for a smaller orchestra to open its season including Handel, Mozart and Vaughan Williams. The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba is a short orchestral interlude in Handel’s epic Solomon opera. Vaughan Williams’s famous Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis is an all-time favourite of string players and Mozart’s immortal 29th Symphony completes our first ‘Symphonic Vaccine’ for a happy and healthy musical year ahead.
